Boundaries
In the “real world” boundaries are easy to see, fences, walls, painted lines, even landscaped yards are all boundaries. In our culture, these physical markers say—“this is mine and that is yours”. Boundaries help define our world.
Mental / emotional boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions. Mental / emotional boundaries come from our self-concept; they define the extent of our self-concept. These are the boundaries we focus on in this workshop. These boundaries are not walls.
Mental / emotional boundaries are intangible. Imagine them as property lines. As with property lines, boundaries are markers, allowing in what we want. Strong mental / emotional boundaries keep us from taking on others’ feeling, and behaviors also. It’s like having a brightly colored NO TRESPASSING sign on our gate to keep out what we don’t want, while the gate can let in what we want.
